Joint Contracture Release

Joint contractures are one of the common complications of hand trauma and can have an array of causes related to contractions or adhesions of the tendons, thickening of the synovium, contracture of the ligaments or joint capsule, insufficient skin cover or scarring, and bone block or exostosis within the joint.

Joint Contracture Release Treatment

Conventional joint contracture treatment consists of a combination of arthrosis, tenolysis, and, as a last resort, arthrodesis, and replacement. However, these treatments do not achieve the best results because of the long delay in injury. The surgical release of digital joint contractions leads to excessive stretching of the neurovascular structures, which leads to their damage. In addition, there is a lack of skin protection.

The progressive extension of distraction prevents such complications and does not lead to permanent tissue modifications and allows the release of joint contractions in the event of the failure of traditional methods. The use of such techniques to release post-traumatic joint contractions and not the consequences of burns has not been reported.

The aim of joint contracture release treatment is to lengthen the proximal interphalangeal core of the joint and to stabilize the distal interphalangeal submersible joint with a Kirschner wire in order to avoid contraction of the joint.

joint contracture

Dr. Neil Toft is an expert in performing minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures where he effectively diagnoses and also treats stiff joints of the hand

This procedure involves the surgeon in creating an incision & joint contracture release by the surgeon in performing the procedure.

Then the doctor will evaluate the injured area and insert thin surgical equipment through the other incisions then all the adhesions would be released and any boney growths or abnormal scar tissues can also be excised at the same time. Since this is a minimally invasive procedure the recovery time is also fast & near complete.
