Sebaceous Cysts Treatment

A skin cyst is a fluid-filled bump that lies just underneath the skin & is normally harmless and however, the cysts need to be checked by the physician.

What are Sebaceous Cysts?

Sebaceous cysts are the most common type of cysts and are found in the face and throughout the body. They are caused by a blockage of one of the small sebaceous glands in the skin. These glands produce an oily material that keeps the skin moist, and when the pores in the sebaceous membrane block, the oily material builds up into a cyst on the skin. Some cyst types can have a diameter of up to 5 mm (3 cm) and rise or stretch over the skin above.

Cyst Removal Surgical Techniques

Sebaceous cysts on the face can be removed for cosmetic reasons, but their removal can also prevent them from becoming infected. When a cyst becomes infected, it usually occurs when it becomes painful, red and warm. An infected cyst can emit a pale yellow, smelly material. The sebaceous cyst removal treatment involves the administration of antibiotics to eliminate the infection and settle.

Freezing

This works by freezing the cyst under the skin. Cryotherapy is used in extreme cold because the skin hates the blood supply to the cysts. This causes the cysts to scrape off and then fall off for 7-10 days.

Cryotherapy

The procedure takes about 5 to 10 minutes. If it is not suitable for the cyst, your surgeon may recommend that you undergo a surgical cyst removal. This is done with curettage or deposit. A curette, a sharp spoon-like object, is used.

This is used to scrape the cyst off the skin. Then the wound is sealed with heat and there is no need to sew. The wound usually heals in two to three weeks.

Surgical cyst removal

Surgical excision is considered the most routine method of removing cysts. A scalpel, knife, scissors or razor are used to remove the cyst from the skin. During the removal, you will be given local anesthesia to prevent pain or discomfort. In some cases, surgical excision may be considered the best option.
